Taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in the swift apprehension of a man who attempted to steal a vehicle containing two young children. The incident unfolded last night when a 28-year-old woman was involved in a minor accident on Victoria Parade. While she waited for police assistance, she inadvertently left the keys in the ignition, providing the opportunity for the suspect to jump into the driver’s seat and drive away with her two daughters in the backseat.

Upon receiving the report, police quickly alerted taxi operators in the area about the stolen vehicle. Using their Radio Transmitters (RT), the information was disseminated throughout the network. The vehicle was soon spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect stopped to release the two girls from the car.

A nearby taxi driver intercepted the vehicle, which allowed police the vital minutes needed to arrive and take the suspect into custody. However, the man resisted arrest and assaulted four officers. Despite these attempts to evade capture, he was ultimately apprehended, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, praised the quick action of the taxi operators, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration in crime prevention. “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime,” ACP Driu stated.

In acknowledgment of their bravery and quick thinking, a team from the Totogo Police Station is scheduled to visit the taxi operators today to express gratitude for their support in resolving the matter.

This incident highlights the significance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement in fostering safer neighborhoods. It also serves as a testament to the proactive efforts of local taxi drivers who are ready to assist in maintaining the safety of their community.

Overall, the collaborative efforts of the Suva taxi operators and the police not only resulted in the suspect’s arrest but also ensured the safe return of the children, showcasing the positive impact community involvement can have in times of crisis.
