Taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in the recent apprehension of a man who attempted to steal a vehicle with two young children inside. The incident unfolded last evening when a 28-year-old mother was involved in an accident on Victoria Parade. While waiting for the police to arrive, she inadvertently left her keys in the ignition.
A suspect took advantage of the situation, jumping into the car and driving off with the woman’s two daughters still in the backseat. Upon realizing the vehicle had been stolen, police quickly contacted local taxi operators and disseminated information through their Radio Transmitters (RT).
The stolen car was ultimately stopped on Rewa Street by a taxi driver, allowing police officers to arrive and arrest the suspect. In an effort to resist capture, the man assaulted four police officers. He is currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu praised the swift actions of the taxi operators, highlighting their collaboration with law enforcement in addressing crime. “These taxi operators had assisted Police in apprehending the culprit, and this is an example of working together to combat such incidents,” ACP Driu stated.
To recognize their commendable efforts, a team from Totogo Police Station is scheduled to visit the taxi operators today.
This incident not only underscores the effectiveness of community cooperation in ensuring public safety but also demonstrates the positive outcomes that can arise when citizens actively assist law enforcement. It serves as a reminder that vigilance and quick action can lead to the successful prevention of crime, helping to create safer environments for everyone.
