In March this year, a long-held dream finally came true for a Fijian of Indian descent living in Fiji, who had always aspired to visit India. This opportunity arose through the 74th Know India Programme, organized by the Indian High Commission in Fiji.
The journey lasted nearly three weeks, during which participants stayed at the Hyatt Hotel in Delhi alongside a diverse group of 40 individuals from nine different countries. The trip was more than just a visit; it provided an immersive experience into India’s rich cultural heritage.
The adventure began in Delhi, where the vibrant city welcomed them with a mix of modernity and tradition. The luxurious Hyatt Hotel served as a comfortable base for exploration. The excitement grew as they ventured out to discover the various attractions of Delhi, each with its unique historical significance.
A highlight of the trip was the visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra, renowned as one of the world’s most beautiful structures and a symbol of love and architectural brilliance. The grandeur of the white marble façade captivated the group, and the intricate details, along with the serene reflection in the surrounding water, created a breathtaking sight. Standing in front of the Taj Mahal reminded them of a timeless beauty that transcends generations.
They also visited the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, gaining valuable insight into the institution that trains future leaders of the Indian Army. Guided tours and interactions with cadets revealed the academy’s storied history and its crucial role in shaping India’s defense forces, leaving a lasting impression of pride and discipline.
The group’s exploration of Delhi continued with visits to its many historical sites. The Red Fort, with its massive walls and rich history, offered a glimpse into Mughal architecture’s grandeur. Walking through the fort’s gates, they could almost hear the echoes of the past. Similarly, the Old Fort (Purana Qila) revealed layers of Delhi’s history, its ancient walls telling tales from centuries ago.
India Gate, a memorial honoring Indian soldiers who lost their lives in World War I, served as a solemn tribute to their sacrifices. The striking design of the monument and its surrounding gardens provided a peaceful escape from the city’s busyness.
A poignant moment of the journey occurred at Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. The simplicity of the site, featuring a black marble platform and an eternal flame, was a testament to Gandhi’s enduring legacy. Paying respects at the site of the Father of the Nation’s cremation was a humbling experience.
Their visit to Rashtra Bhawan (Rashtrapati Bhavan) was another memorable highlight. The presidential residence, with its impressive architecture and sprawling gardens, offered a glimpse into India’s administrative heart and the significance of the presidency within its democratic framework.
The Bharat Mandapam, a newly established convention center, showcased India’s modernity and progress. Its sleek design and advanced facilities highlighted the country’s dedication to hosting international events and fostering global relationships.
One of the most engaging aspects of the trip was the visit to the Prime Minister’s Museum, which presented an insightful exploration of India’s political history. The exhibits, featuring personal memorabilia, photographs, and interactive displays, vividly brought to life the stories of India’s leaders and their contributions to the nation.

The bustling night markets of Delhi provided a sensory overload, with an abundance of handicrafts, textiles, and traditional artifacts. Returning to Fiji, the traveler carried not just souvenirs and photographs but also a profound appreciation for India’s cultural richness and historical depth.
