The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are set to implement additional traffic patrols and checkpoints in high-risk zones and accident-prone intersections as part of a joint effort to enhance road safety. This initiative follows a serious accident in Vitogo on Kings Road, which resulted in 18 individuals being hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital after a collision between a bus and a utility vehicle.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Filipe Tuisawau, expressed condolences to those injured and stressed the critical importance of heightened vigilance and strict compliance with road safety laws among all drivers and pedestrians. The National Joint Operations Order, which involves cooperation between the LTA, Fiji Police, and Municipal Council enforcement officers, aims to improve road safety and reduce road fatalities by enforcing robust adherence to traffic regulations.
With the festive season approaching, this operation, which will run from November 1 to January 31, is timely as it coincides with an expected increase in road traffic due to holiday festivities, family gatherings, and celebrations. Encouragingly, road fatalities have decreased this year, with 51 reported as of November 11 compared to 71 during the same timeframe last year.
This proactive approach by the authorities offers hope for improved road safety during a period known for increased travel, highlighting a commitment to protecting lives and fostering safer communities during the holidays.
In summary, the strengthening of traffic enforcement reflects a collaborative effort to address road safety, especially with an increase in traffic expected in the festive season. The recent decrease in fatalities is a sign of progress that can inspire ongoing improvements in road safety across Fiji.
