Ubayd Haider is currently recovering in the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Aspen Hospital after suffering significant injuries during his recent boxing match against China’s Runqi Zhou. The bout, which took place last Saturday night at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, saw Haider, who was previously known as Nathan Singh, struggling under Zhou’s relentless offensive.
Throughout the fight, Haider spent a considerable amount of time on the defensive, enduring numerous heavy body punches. Zhou maintained a strong and aggressive presence, similar to a warrior, ultimately leading to Haider being knocked down twice in the ninth round, with the second knockdown preventing him from rising in time.
Following the match, Haider collapsed while heading to his dressing room and received immediate medical attention from the ringside doctor. He was first transported to Nadi Hospital before being transferred to Lautoka Hospital, where he is currently being treated.
Zhou later remarked that their strategy was straightforward: target Haider’s body to weaken him for a stoppage in the later rounds. He expressed his satisfaction with the fight, commenting, “He (Haider) had too much smiling and not too much punching.” He acknowledged his love for Fiji and expressed gratitude for the support received.
Zhou’s trainer, Angelo Hyder, criticized Haider’s training and preparation, suggesting that his corner should have anticipated the level of challenge Zhou presented. Hyder emphasized the importance of rigorous training and the need to engage with top-level sparring partners to succeed in the sport.
