A businessman from Tavua expressed his sadness after witnessing a foal beside its deceased mother in Matacawa, Tagitagi. Disturbed by the sight, Vishal Gounder chose to bury the horse with the assistance of his workers.
Gounder reported that the dead horse may have been involved in criminal activities, as a group of youths allegedly attempted to use it to steal cattle in the vicinity. “In the early morning, a group of youths were trying to steal two cattle, pulling them with the horse,” he mentioned. Fortunately, local villagers intervened, rescuing the cattle, but the mother horse sadly did not survive, leaving the young foal desperately seeking nourishment.
The Greater Good Foundation Fiji, an animal rescue organization based in Lautoka, noted that the mother horse was small and likely succumbed to overexertion. They emphasized the need for the young foal to be introduced to a foster mother, giving it a chance at survival and a better quality of life.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by animals in the region and the importance of community awareness regarding animal welfare. Efforts by local organizations and compassionate individuals can make a significant difference in the lives of these vulnerable creatures. It’s heartening to know that there are people dedicated to helping animals in distress and ensuring their well-being.
In summary, while this event is tragic, it serves as a reminder of the essential role that community awareness and support play in animal welfare.
