Heartbreak in Tavua: Pastor’s Tragic Loss and a Wife’s Unwavering Faith

VILISI Verebasaga is mourning the sudden and tragic death of her husband, Pastor Jope Tuivanuavou, who was killed in a locomotive accident in Lausa, Tavua on Wednesday. At the age of 55, Mr. Tuivanuavou was involved in the incident while transporting loaded railway carts to the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) mill in Ba.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa, the accident occurred around midday when the locomotive, carrying several cane carts, veered left and subsequently fell into a dry creek at the FSC train lane bridge. A 44-year-old locomotive driver, who was with Mr. Tuivanuavou, is currently receiving treatment at Lautoka Aspen Hospital.

Originally from Savuna Village, Moturiki, Mr. Tuivanuavou had dedicated 12 years of service to FSC while also being the spiritual leader at the Fortified Wall Evangelical Church in Tavua. Ms. Verebasaga reflected on their 36 years of marriage, describing her husband as a humble man of God who always supported their family.

In the wake of her husband’s tragic accident, she emphasized the importance of her faith. Just a week prior, she felt compelled to engage in prayer and fasting without knowing the reason. Upon receiving the heartbreaking news, Ms. Verebasaga recognized that her spiritual preparation had equipped her for this challenging moment.

She expressed gratitude for her husband’s life and reassured herself with the belief that everything happens according to God’s will. Reflecting on their final weeks together, she noted a significant strengthening of their bond and an atmosphere filled with love and peace.

Ms. Verebasaga encouraged others facing similar hardships to maintain hope and trust in God’s plan. Mr. Tuivanuavou is survived by his wife, eight children, and four grandchildren.
