Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist from Hearing Aid Services in Australia, emphasizes the importance of ear care, highlighting the lack of awareness among the public during a recent two-day screening at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town. Mohammed attended to 40 patients, ranging from a four-year-old to an 80-year-old, many of whom suffered from various ear issues such as perforated eardrums, ear infections, blocked ear canals from wax buildup, and other complications.

He pointed out that there are no audiometrists available in the northern region and patients often have to travel to Suva for medical advice. He expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services would consider sending an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa monthly to provide necessary assistance.

During the screening, Mohammed recounted an emotional moment with a female patient who experienced hearing impairment. After receiving a hearing aid, she was overcome with joy as she could finally hear voices again. He also attended to students from the Labasa School for Special Education, noting that some required urgent medical attention and hearing aids.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by those living with hearing impairments, Mohammed called for greater community efforts, particularly for children, to raise funds for overseas treatment, similar to medical missions organized in the past by the Lions Club in Labasa. He stressed the critical role of ears in communication and overall quality of life, advocating for increased awareness about ear health in the region.

In summary, the article illustrates the significant need for ear health awareness and services in Labasa, urging local health authorities to take action. Mohammed’s hopeful call for more support could pave the way for improved healthcare access for those suffering from hearing impairments, ultimately transforming lives within the community.
