Hearing Health: The Overlooked Organ in Labasa

A recent health initiative in Labasa Town, Australia, highlighted the essential need for ear care awareness, as emphasized by audiometrist Nasif Mohammed from Hearing Aid Services. Mohammed conducted a two-day screening event, assisting 40 patients ranging in age from four to 80 years old. He reported that many individuals faced serious ear health issues, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, blockage due to excessive wax, scar tissue, and persistent ear discharge.

During his visit, Mohammed expressed concern over the lack of audiometric services in the northern region, noting that patients often travel to Suva for medical consultations. He urged the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to consider sending an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa monthly to provide much-needed assistance to local residents.

An emotional highlight came when Mohammed treated a female patient with hearing impairment who initially sat in despair but was brought to tears of joy after receiving a hearing aid. He also identified students with hearing issues at the Labasa School for Special Education, stating that several required immediate medical care and hearing devices.

Reflecting on his previous involvement with similar services organized by the Lions Club Labasa before the pandemic, Mohammed expressed hope for further initiatives aimed at raising funds to facilitate treatments for children in need, possibly even considering overseas medical trips. He stressed the importance of ear health, emphasizing that living without hearing profoundly affects one’s ability to communicate and live a fulfilling life.

In summary, this initiative not only sheds light on the critical need for ear health education and accessible services but also proposes a pathway to better support those in need. Through increased awareness and community cooperation, more individuals can receive the care necessary to enhance their quality of life.
