Hearing is a crucial sense that many take for granted, yet a significant number are unaware of how to care for their ears, as highlighted by Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist from Hearing Aid Services in Australia. Recently, during a two-day screening at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, Mr. Mohammed attended to 40 patients, ranging in age from four to eighty.
He observed that many patients suffered from issues due to poor ear management, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, blocked ear canals due to wax buildup, and scar tissue, with some experiencing ear discharge that they were unable to clean properly.
Mr. Mohammed emphasized the importance of increased awareness regarding ear health. He noted that there is a lack of audiometrists in the northern region of Fiji, forcing patients to travel to Suva for medical advice. He urged the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to consider sending an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa on a monthly basis, ensuring that patients have access to necessary care.
During the screening, he encountered a female patient with hearing impairment who was visibly depressed. After Mr. Mohammed fitted her with a hearing aid, she was overwhelmed with joy upon hearing voices for the first time, illustrating the profound impact that proper ear care can have on individuals’ lives. Furthermore, he also worked with students from the Labasa School for Special Education, identifying several who required urgent medical attention and hearing aids.
Reflecting on his experiences, Mr. Mohammed expressed hope for increased initiatives to assist children in need of treatment, such as fundraising efforts to send them overseas for specialized care—a concept that was actively pursued by the Lions Club Labasa before the pandemic.
He emphasized the significance of ear health, pointing out that living without the ability to hear severely affects individuals’ lives and communication. Upon returning to Labasa after several years, he believes there is a pressing need for more ear health awareness in the community.
This story highlights the critical need for improved ear health awareness and services in regions lacking such resources. By advocating for regular medical visits and engaging the community, there is potential for significantly enhancing the quality of life for many individuals facing hearing challenges. The hope for increased support and awareness serves as a reminder that taking care of our hearing is a vital component of overall health and well-being.
