Hearing Health Crisis: Are We Ignoring Our Ears?

Hearing health is a vital aspect of overall well-being, yet many people lack the knowledge necessary for proper ear care, according to Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist with Hearing Aid Services in Australia. During a recent two-day screening event at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, Mr. Mohammed assessed 40 patients, whose ages ranged from four to 80 years old.

Many of the patients exhibited issues stemming from poor ear management, such as perforated eardrums, ear infections, blocked ear canals due to wax buildup, scar tissue, and difficulty cleansing ear discharge properly.

Highlighting the need for increased awareness and services in the area, Mr. Mohammed noted, “There is no audiometrist in the North, and patients who require medical advice must travel to Suva.” He expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services would consider dispatching an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa monthly, making vital care more accessible to residents.

During his consultations, Mr. Mohammed encountered a female patient struggling with hearing impairment. He moved by her emotional journey and shared how she experienced joy when she could finally hear voices after receiving a hearing aid. He also attended to students from the Labasa School for Special Education, pinpointing that some required urgent medical assistance and hearing devices.

Reflecting on his previous work organized by the Lions Club Labasa before the pandemic, Mr. Mohammed advocated for collaborative efforts to raise funds for children requiring overseas treatment. He emphasized the profound impact hearing loss can have on communication and daily life, reinforcing the essential role ears play in human connection.

As Mr. Mohammed continues to raise awareness in Labasa, it highlights a significant opportunity for the community to come together and advocate for better hearing care and resources, paving the way for a healthier, more connected society.

In summary, increased accessibility to ear care through local services could greatly benefit those in need, promoting better communication and quality of life. It is a hopeful reminder that awareness and action can lead to positive change in community health initiatives.
