Hearing aid consultant Nasif Mohammed from Australia recently highlighted the critical need for ear care awareness during a two-day screening event held at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town. He examined 40 patients, ranging in age from four to 80, and noted that many suffered from conditions caused by improper ear management, such as perforated eardrums, ear infections, blocked ear canals, and scar tissue.
Mr. Mohammed emphasized the lack of audiometric resources in northern regions, stating that many patients are forced to travel to Suva for medical advice. He expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services would consider sending an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa at least once a month to provide much-needed assistance to local residents.
One poignant moment during his visit involved a female patient with hearing impairment, who experienced tears of joy after receiving support from a hearing aid and being able to hear voices again. Mr. Mohammed also treated students with hearing issues at the Labasa School for Special Education, many of whom require urgent medical care.
Reflecting on the importance of ear health, he urged for increased community awareness and support, particularly for children. Mr. Mohammed reminisced about a similar service provided before the pandemic and expressed his hopes for fundraising initiatives to send children abroad for treatment.
As he concluded his visit, he stressed the significance of hearing in communication and the challenges faced by individuals with hearing loss. His heartfelt call for action highlights the urgent need for improved ear health services in Labasa, fostering hope for better care and awareness in the community.
In summary, Mr. Mohammed’s efforts underscore the importance of ear health awareness and the necessity for local resources and support systems to enhance the quality of life for those affected by hearing issues. This emphasis on community collaboration and medical outreach can pave the way for a brighter future for individuals facing hearing challenges.
