The importance of ear health is often overlooked, according to Nasif Mohammed, a consultant audiometrist from Hearing Aid Services in Australia. During a recent screening event in Labasa Town, he attended to 40 patients, ranging in age from four to 80 years. His findings revealed that many individuals suffer from various ear conditions, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, and blockages caused by earwax.
Mr. Mohammed expressed concern about the lack of audiometric services in the North, stating that patients often need to travel to Suva for medical advice. He advocated for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to send an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa on a monthly basis to provide essential care.
During his visit, he witnessed the emotional impact of hearing loss on patients, including a female patient who was visibly depressed before receiving treatment. After being fitted with a hearing aid, her joy at hearing again was palpable, showcasing the profound effect that proper ear care can have on individuals’ lives.
He also addressed the needs of students from Labasa School for Special Education, emphasizing that some require urgent medical attention and hearing aids. Reflecting on a previous initiative organized by the Lions Club Labasa before the pandemic, Mr. Mohammed expressed hope for future fundraising efforts to support children with hearing issues by facilitating treatment overseas.
The lack of awareness regarding ear health and effective treatment options poses a significant challenge for those unable to hear, profoundly affecting their ability to communicate and engage with the world around them. Mr. Mohammed emphasized the need for greater awareness and resources devoted to ear health, particularly in underserved areas.
In summary, the article highlights the critical need for improved ear health services in Northern Fiji, advocating for greater resources and awareness to enhance the quality of life for individuals affected by hearing impairments. With community support and awareness initiatives, there is hope for positive change in providing effective ear care to those in need.
