Many individuals overlook the importance of ear care, as highlighted by Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist with Hearing Aid Services based in Australia. Recently, during a two-day screening event at My Lab Pte Limited in Labasa Town, he treated 40 patients, ranging in age from four to 80 years old.
Mr. Mohammed noted that common issues observed included mismanagement leading to problems such as perforated eardrums, ear infections, blockage from earwax, and ear discharge. He emphasized the lack of local audiometrists in the northern region, stating that patients often travel to Suva for medical advice. He expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services would consider sending an Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist to Labasa monthly, enabling patients to receive needed assistance closer to home.
One poignant moment of his visit involved a female patient with hearing impairment who was initially feeling distressed in the clinic. However, after receiving care and using a hearing aid, her tears of sadness turned to joy as she experienced the sound of voices for the first time. Mr. Mohammed also examined students from the Labasa School for Special Education, some of whom urgently need medical attention and hearing aids.
Reflecting on his previous work with the Lions Club of Labasa before the pandemic, he underscored the need for awareness and community support for children requiring urgent help. He suggested that fundraising efforts could facilitate overseas treatment for children with severe hearing challenges.
He reiterated the significance of hearing and communication in daily life, noting that many affected individuals, including children, struggle without these essential capabilities. His return to Labasa after several years has fueled his determination to raise awareness and foster support for those in need.
In summary, higher awareness regarding ear health and better access to specialists in Labasa can significantly improve the quality of life for many residents, particularly children, enabling them to overcome their challenges and thrive. The community’s collective efforts in supporting these initiatives could lead to brighter futures for those affected.
