Pacific Specialists Healthcare recently introduced Pill Cams, also known as Capsule Endoscopy, prompting the hospital to place additional orders to ensure uninterrupted service. According to PSH’s director and CEO, Parvish Kumar, the demand for this type of diagnostic service surged once it was announced to the public.

“We have already placed orders for more units and expect them within a week to avoid any service disruptions,” Kumar stated. He emphasized the hospital’s commitment to maintaining a minimum stock level, ensuring they are prepared for a three-month supply at all times.

Kumar acknowledged the growing interest in this technology for diagnosing digestive issues, noting that while they anticipated a modest increase in use compared to conventional methods, the actual demand far exceeded expectations. “Initially, we expected only a 4 to 5 percent increase in usage based on literature from neighboring countries.”

He advocates for regular screenings, particularly for those over 65, recommending the procedure every two years as a preventative measure against bowel cancer. “We were surprised by the significant number of patients seeking this procedure,” he remarked.

Capsule endoscopy involves ingesting a small capsule equipped with a camera, which captures images as it moves through the small intestine, an area difficult to reach with traditional endoscopy methods. Kumar pointed out that this non-invasive technology allows for a comprehensive examination of the small bowel.

Additionally, PSH Nadi has observed an increase in visitors, including tourists seeking medical treatments for various conditions. “We’ve had tourists arrive in critical condition, and we have stabilized them before arranging their Medivac back home,” Kumar shared. The hospital’s 24-hour operation, staffed with expert medical professionals, has contributed to this uptick in patients.

Kumar also mentioned plans to introduce more advanced technologies that could significantly enhance healthcare services in Fiji, including the capability for open-heart surgeries and other intensive procedures. “My goal is to provide world-class health services for both Fiji and the broader Pacific Islands,” he said, expressing the desire to make medical treatments more affordable and accessible for local populations. “As a local who understands the healthcare landscape, I am constantly exploring ways to improve healthcare financing and promote universal health coverage.”
