Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, expressed deep sorrow over the irreversible losses experienced during the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks on November 2, 2000. While delivering a traditional matanigasau (apology) during the ceremony commemorating the 24th anniversary of the incident, he acknowledged that the military cannot undo the past but can strive to mend the fractured relationships that developed as a result.

Maj-Gen Kalouniwai reflected on how the mutiny sowed seeds of doubt among the youth regarding military leadership, emphasizing the need to restore their trust and faith in the armed forces. He recognized the enduring pain felt by the families of the Combined Army Reserve (CRW) soldiers who lost their lives during the mutiny, highlighting a plea for forgiveness: “For too long you have been crying… we come with our heads bowed asking for your forgiveness from the pain caused by our leaders in the military.”

He memorialized some of the fallen soldiers, including Selestino Kalounivale, Jone Davui, Epeneri Bainimoli, Lagani Rokowaqa, and Iowane Waseroma, capturing the gravity of their sacrifices.

This heartfelt acknowledgment of past mistakes and the commitment to rebuilding trust can serve as a crucial step towards healing, not just within the military but in broader society as well. As the military looks to the future, there lies a hopeful potential for stronger relationships and a united community moving forward.

In summary, Maj-Gen Kalouniwai’s reflections on the past and his commitment to repairing relationships highlight a critical moment of reckoning for the military in Fiji, aiming to restore faith among the people it serves. This sentiment of reconciliation represents a positive path towards healing and unity in the face of historical challenges.
