A significant chapter in the history of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has concluded with the successful completion of its Reconciliation and Restoration program, which lasted nearly a year. The conclusion of this program coincided with the 24th anniversary of the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua. This milestone was met with sentiments of relief and hope from the families of the eight soldiers who lost their lives during those tumultuous events.
Salanieta Veilewai, the wife of the late Private Temo Veilewai, expressed her gratitude toward the RFMF for their initiative. She noted that the program has alleviated the long-standing pain and sorrow that her family has carried for nearly a quarter of a century. “Thank you, RFMF, for constantly remembering us, whose heads of families were lost during the events,” she stated, reflecting the collective appreciation that many families feel.
Litiana Davui, the wife of the late Jone Davui, also shared her family’s emotional journey during this time. She extended her apologies on behalf of her family for any role her husband might have played in the past and conveyed her forgiveness towards those involved in his loss.
For Mulase Rawaileba, son of the late Lance Corporal Simione Rawaileba, the event provided a bittersweet moment. He shared his scant memories of his father but acknowledged the relief that the program brought to his relatives, suggesting a positive shift within the military organization. “A new chapter has begun as a great deal of pain was relieved,” he remarked, signifying the importance of moving forward.
This event marks a pivotal moment for the RFMF and the affected families, symbolizing a commitment to healing and reconciliation. As the military institution seeks to forge a renewed path, there is optimism for a more unified future, where respect for the sacrifices made can pave the way for healing and understanding.
This story highlights not just a closing chapter but also the potential for renewal and reconciliation within the community, encouraging hope and unity among the affected families and the military as they look toward the future.
