Healing the Past: A Historic Gathering for Fiji’s Former Soldiers

Former military personnel involved in the 2000 takeover of the Sukunaivalu VC Barracks, along with their families, gathered yesterday for a day focused on reflection and healing.

The event was led by Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), who facilitated a talanoa session with attendees. He emphasized the significance of confronting the past and expressed satisfaction at the former soldiers acknowledging their mistakes.

For many participants, this marked their first return to the barracks since the coup in 2000. The session provided a sense of relief for both the soldiers and their families.

Rupeni Vosayaco, a former lieutenant of the CRW Unit, expressed a feeling of freedom following the event and extended his gratitude to the RFMF Commander for organizing the gathering. Vosayaco described the occasion as historic and highlighted the Commander’s openness to engage as a notable change from previous leadership.

He also voiced hope for an end to the coup culture in Fiji, which has contributed to division and distress within families and communities.
