Healing the Nation: A Call for Dialogue and Reconciliation

Sashi Kiran, the chair of the Truth and Reconciliation steering committee and Assistant Minister for Women, emphasizes that significant efforts are still needed to heal the nation. Speaking at the Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light Summit in Suva on Saturday, Ms. Kiran highlighted that addressing historical traumas is crucial for ensuring a brighter future for younger generations.

“Our nation’s history demonstrates that the pursuit of harmony is not merely an option but a necessity for everyone’s welfare,” she stated. Ms. Kiran acknowledged the challenges faced over the past four decades and noted the extensive work required to help the nation heal.

She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the truth and reconciliation process, revealing that a bill would be presented in Parliament soon to form the commission. Furthermore, she praised the Republic of Fiji Military Forces for their ongoing internal reconciliation and restoration initiatives.

“The reconciliation efforts within the RFMF are commendable,” she remarked. “While discussions surrounding the RFMF can be challenging, they inspire us to engage in difficult conversations across various settings, which is never easy.”

Ms. Kiran stressed the importance of fostering dialogue, healing, and peacebuilding in all aspects of life, including workplace, family, and community environments. She also mentioned that during the consultations for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, young people shared their appreciation for the process and reflected on how previous political unrest has affected their families and led to broader societal impacts.
