Healing Fiji: Church Backs Military’s Unity Initiative

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has given its support to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This program aims to promote healing and strengthen unity within the military as well as the wider community, highlighting a dedication to collective progress and national development.

Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, underscored the significance of the initiative. “We are backing it, particularly in light of the military’s ongoing efforts. They presented the program to the President and me, and we have discussed the updates,” said Reverend Lasawa.

He also commended the government for suggesting the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We support the concept of truth and reconciliation. We have sent one of our representatives to participate in the government’s initiative,” he added.

The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is in discussions with a variety of stakeholders, including leaders from civil society, religious organizations, political parties, and media outlets, to enhance the draft legal framework.

Chaired by Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, the Committee’s goal is to create a comprehensive legal, governance, and financial framework for the Commission. The chairperson will provide direct reports to the Prime Minister.
