The Chinese Embassy recently held a welcoming reception for the Guandong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical team, who had been in Fiji for two days to perform cataract surgeries at the CWM Eye Clinic.

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the significance of the partnership between Guandong, China, and Fiji, highlighting advancements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education sectors that have emerged from this collaboration. He noted that since establishing a sister-city relationship in 2011, the two regions have engaged in fruitful cooperation across various domains, including notable projects like the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and the upgrades to Marist Brothers High School.

During the reception, Ambassador Zhou addressed the impact of cataracts on the Fijian community and commended the Bright Medical Team for their efforts in alleviating this issue. Since 2013, the team has been conducting free eye surgeries for cataract patients across Fiji and other Pacific Island nations, restoring sight for over 200 patients, and earning the affectionate title of “Angel of Light” among locals.

Hung Wenyong, a member of the Bright Medical Team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to treat 50 eye patients in Fiji, noting that 47 of these patients had cataracts. He added that aside from their medical mission, the team was pleased to help strengthen the bilateral relationship between Fiji and China.

The longstanding relationship between China and Fiji has undeniably fostered positivity and progress, leading to significant advancements in the Fijian economy.

This collaboration not only addresses critical healthcare needs but also lays important groundwork for future development. Such initiatives illustrate the power of international partnerships in the pursuit of better health and well-being for communities.

In summary, the event signifies a vital intersection of healthcare and diplomacy, which can potentially pave the way for more extensive collaboration between nations, promoting hope and well-being for those affected by health challenges.
