Healing a Nation: The Road to Reconciliation and Dialogue

Sashi Kiran, the chair of the Truth and Reconciliation steering committee and Assistant Minister for Women, emphasized the ongoing effort needed to heal the nation. Speaking at the Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light Summit in Suva on Saturday, Ms. Kiran highlighted that addressing historical traumas is essential for securing a brighter future for the younger generations.

She remarked, “Our nation’s history has taught us that the pursuit of harmony is not merely an option but a necessity for the well-being of all.” Acknowledging the challenges of the past four decades, she stated that considerable work remains to aid in the nation’s healing process.

Ms. Kiran reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the truth and reconciliation initiative, announcing that a bill will soon be introduced in Parliament to establish the commission. She praised the Republic of Fiji Military Forces for its internal reconciliation and restoration efforts, noting, “There’s very commendable work of reconciliation within the RFMF.”

She acknowledged that discussions surrounding the RFMF are challenging but expressed hope that such conversations would inspire broader dialogue about difficult issues across various communities and workplaces. “There’s work needed in each sphere of work, family, and community on creating spaces for dialogue, healing, and peacebuilding,” she added.

During the Truth and Reconciliation Commission consultations, Ms. Kiran mentioned that many youths expressed gratitude for the process and shared how past political unrest has affected their families and community dynamics.
