Heads of schools and school management committees are now officially under scrutiny for failing to uphold their responsibilities regarding the maintenance of educational institutions. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro issued this alert after noting the mismanagement of public funds intended for the upkeep of Nabua Primary School, which has seen a significant decline in its infrastructure.
Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of community involvement in the educational sector, stating, “Unless school committees and communities take ownership of their schools, the quality of education will always be questionable.” To improve the situation, he has mandated the engagement of local leaders, stakeholders, and district officers to collectively tackle the infrastructural challenges facing schools.
In a related matter, the ministry dismissed claims made by a committee member from Natusara Primary School in Kadavu regarding transportation issues affecting students. Minister Radrodro clarified that the interruption of student transport services does not impact the Year 8 examinations, which have already taken place. He confirmed that classes resumed normally at Natusara Primary School, with transport services reinstated to facilitate student attendance.
Additionally, the minister reassured that payments for transport assistance are being processed at the standard rate, and it typically takes about five working days for payments to be finalized upon submission of requisite documents to the District Office. He encouraged service providers seeking additional vouchers to submit the necessary paperwork, which includes a request letter, community support letter, and a cost analysis.
Overall, the ministry’s efforts indicate a collaborative approach to enhance school management and infrastructure, ultimately aiming for a better educational experience for students. By actively involving community stakeholders, the government hopes to build a stronger foundation for the future of education in the region.
This proactive stance reinforces a commitment to accountability and improvement in education, highlighting the potential for positive change when communities and government work together.
