Harassment Allegations Shake Hibiscus Festival: Investigation Findings Awaited

An independent investigation into harassment allegations that arose during the crowning night of the Hibiscus Festival has been concluded. The results are currently under review by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this but refrained from disclosing specific details about the findings.

Nalumisa emphasized that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, adhering to council policies. The independent panel responsible for the investigation included the Chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.

“We are committed to ensuring that the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted according to all legal and regulatory standards,” Minister Nalumisa stated. He also noted that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement as this process unfolds.

Background information reveals that allegations of sexual harassment were brought to light after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, with claims of inappropriate touching during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
