Guardians of Memory: A Grandmother’s Tribute to Love and Sacrifice

Spread the love

Lavenia Volaukitoga, 62, has faithfully attended every Remembrance Day event for the past 30 years to honor the memory of her late husband, a fallen soldier. On this year’s Remembrance Day, she was joined by her granddaughter at the National War Memorial Grounds in Veiuto, Suva.

Ms. Volaukitoga’s husband lost his life on June 4, 1994, after being shot down by the extremist group Hezbollah while on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. Despite the heartache, she has found strength through her faith, stating, “No matter how painful it was, I chose God.” Her unwavering resolve enabled her to raise her five children on her own, relying on her resilience as a market vendor for support.

It wasn’t until 2006 that she received an opportunity for employment with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) as a cleaner, a role she maintained until 2016. Currently, she focuses on taking care of her grandchildren, with her oldest grandchild, 19-year-old Wakesa Raiwa, preparing for her first Fiji School Leaving Certificate examination.

Wakesa expressed pride in her grandfather’s legacy, despite never having known him, and shared her ambition of becoming the President one day.

Another attendee, Susana Veretawatini, 59, traveled annually from Naisomua, Vugalei, Tailevu to honor her husband Corporal Lui Veretawatini, who was killed in Sinai in 2008. Although she hoped for her children to join the military, only her son followed that path. Despite hardships, she now finds peace and contentment in her life.

These heartfelt stories from Lavenia and Susana highlight not only the sacrifices made by our brave soldiers but also the resilience of their families in navigating the challenges these losses bring. Their dedication to remembrance serves as a reminder of the strength that love and faith can provide during difficult times.

In summary, Ms. Volaukitoga and Ms. Veretawatini’s experiences reflect the enduring bond between families and the sacrifices made by soldiers, with a hopeful outlook for future generations. Through perseverance and support, they demonstrate that even in sorrow, there is a space for growth, remembrance, and aspirations for a brighter future.
