The Frank Hilton Organisation has reported a notable rise in the number of children seeking support, with an annual increase of 25 percent. Sureni Perera, the Chief Executive Officer, explained that more cases are often identified during special awareness months that highlight the need for early intervention and support.
The organisation plays a vital role in providing assistance to children with disabilities and developmental challenges in Fiji. Perera has observed a spike in the number of children accessing their services, particularly around awareness months dedicated to disabilities. For instance, the observance of Cerebral Palsy Month has resulted in a heightened referral of children to their services.
One encouraging trend noted by Perera is the earlier age at which children are now seeking help. There has been an increase in referrals for children as young as two years old, whereas previously, children would often arrive for assistance at ages 10, 13, or even 18 years. This shift is viewed as a positive indicator, reflecting increased public awareness regarding the importance of early detection and intervention.
The Fijian government has allocated $900,000 to the Frank Hilton Foundation this year, which Perera appreciates. However, she emphasizes the need for additional resources to adequately address the growing demand for services. While she acknowledges the government’s efforts, she points out that there are many competing priorities that make it challenging to secure further funding.
Perera advocates for improvements beyond just financial support; she stresses the importance of enhancing policy frameworks, promoting inclusion, and changing societal attitudes towards disabilities. The Frank Hilton Organisation remains committed to enhancing awareness and resources to better meet the needs of children with disabilities and developmental challenges across Fiji.
Overall, while there are challenges ahead, the increasing early intervention and government support indicate progress in supporting these children effectively.
