The Frank Hilton Organisation has announced a substantial rise in the number of children seeking support, with annual cases increasing by 25 percent. Chief Executive Officer Sureni Perera noted that many of these cases are identified during special awareness months, highlighting the importance of early intervention and support.
The organisation plays a vital role in assisting children with disabilities and developmental challenges in Fiji, and Perera reported that the annual influx of children accessing their services continues to grow. Notably, she observed that during awareness months, especially those focused on conditions like cerebral palsy, the organisation receives a significant number of referrals.
A particularly encouraging trend is the early arrival of children seeking assistance; an increasing number are coming in at ages as young as zero to two, compared to previous generations who often accessed services much later, typically around 10 to 18 years old. This shift indicates a rising awareness regarding the importance of early detection and intervention for developmental issues.
The Fijian government has allocated $900,000 to the Frank Hilton Organisation this year. While Perera expressed gratitude for this funding, she emphasized the necessity for additional resources to accommodate the escalating demand for services. She acknowledged the government’s efforts but pointed out that numerous areas vie for funding and attention.
Beyond financial support, Perera called for a broader change in mindset and policy regarding inclusion for children with disabilities. She stressed that understanding the prerequisites for inclusion and advocating for shifts in public perception are equally important steps toward better support for these children.
The Frank Hilton Organisation remains committed to fostering greater awareness and securing more resources to cater to the needs of children with disabilities and developmental challenges across Fiji.
In summary, while the increasing demand for support is a challenge, the growing awareness and proactive approach towards early intervention are significant steps in the right direction. With continued advocacy and resource allocation, there remains hope for improving the lives of these children and their families.
