Grieving Mother Seeks Justice After Son’s Tragic Job Site Death

A mother is seeking answers from her son’s employer following his untimely death while on the job in Suva.

Anit Anitesh Ram, who lived in Vunivau and worked for Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), reportedly suffered a fatal electric shock while at work on Tuesday. His mother, Puspha Wati, received a call from EFL around 9:22 AM, informing her that Ram had been taken to Oceania Hospital.

The family is mourning the loss of their only provider. “I quickly tried to arrange a flight from Labasa to Suva to check on Anit’s condition, but after an hour, I received a call from my relatives telling me that he had passed away,” Ms. Wati expressed.

She noted that she tried to reach her son’s supervisor several times but was unable to get through, and she had not received any information from EFL either. Ms. Wati insisted that her son would never have acted irresponsibly at work and is pressing EFL for an explanation.

“EFL is usually prompt in sending out notifications about power outages, including one on the same day my son died, which prematurely ended a Parliament session. Yet, when it comes to informing families about their employees’ deaths, they hold back information,” she stated.

An email sent to EFL seeking comment on the incident had not received a response by the time this article was prepared. Ms. Wati mentioned that Ram had joined EFL in November of the previous year and had recently requested a transfer to be nearer to his family.

“My husband and I are unwell, and recently Anit reassured us not to worry, promising he would be home soon,” the 45-year-old mother recalled.

She shared that Ram celebrated his 26th birthday on August 11, and during their last conversation the day before his death, he expressed excitement about participating in the Labasa Sanatan soccer tournament.

“We dedicated many years to raising him so he could lead a good life and care for us in our old age, but now we feel we’ve lost everything.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the victim was found unresponsive and is believed to have been electrocuted. She added that the authorities will await post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death.
