Members of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) held a moment of silence in memory of two former members who recently passed away: the high chief of Rotuma and the Turaga Na Tui Yale of Kadavu. This somber acknowledgment was confirmed by GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula during a media briefing amid the morning tea break.
In addition to honoring their departed colleagues, the meeting serves as an important gathering for chiefs and representatives from the 14 provinces to discuss pressing issues affecting the i-Taukei community. Among the notable attendees is the Attorney-General Graham Leung, who is expected to engage with the council regarding proposed village bylaws.
Over the course of this two-day meeting, critical topics will be addressed, including a review of i-Taukei administration, a feasibility study on decentralizing economic units, and updates on legislation that poses challenges to the i-Taukei people.
Notably, the meeting takes place at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, with participation from His Excellency the President and the Turaga Bale Na Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, underscoring the importance of the discourse.
As this significant dialogue continues, it highlights a commitment to addressing the concerns and aspirations of the i-Taukei community, fostering hope for positive change and development in the future.
In summary, this meeting not only honors the legacy of former leaders but also provides a platform for addressing critical issues and advocating for the welfare of the i-Taukei community, aiming to pave the way for meaningful reforms and growth.
