Members of the Great Council of Chiefs recently held a moment of silence in remembrance of two former members who have passed away: the high chief of Rotuma and the Turaga Na Tui Yale of Kadavu. This acknowledgment of loss was confirmed by the GCC Chairperson, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, during a media briefing at the morning tea break.
In addition to recognizing their contributions, the meeting serves a vital purpose, as it brings together Chiefs and representatives from all 14 provinces to address pressing issues within the i-Taukei community. Notably, the Attorney-General Graham Leung is scheduled to speak on proposed village bylaws, emphasizing the Council’s commitment to legislative engagement.
Throughout the two-day gathering, discussions will focus on important topics, including an i-Taukei administration review, a study on the decentralization of economic units, and an update on legislation that impacts marginalized groups within the community.
Esteemed guests at the event include His Excellency, the President, and the Turaga Bale Na Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, highlighting the significance of this meeting at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
As discussions continue, it is hopeful that this gathering will lead to meaningful advancements and improvements within the i-Taukei community, fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration among its leaders.
