Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his gratitude yesterday to the striking workers of Vatukoula Gold Mines and their families during a meeting held at the Ba Civic Centre. Rabuka reassured them that there is hope after 33 years of hardship, which began when the workers went on strike on February 27, 1991. He acknowledged the many challenges they faced over the past three decades.
Rabuka thanked God for providing another chance to resolve the issue and emphasized the Coalition Government’s commitment to meeting the needs of the people. He also praised Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh and his team for their efforts in reaching a resolution, which included a $9.2 million payout announced in the 2024-2025 National Budget.
Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh mentioned that 185 union members will receive $10,000 each starting from August 1. For the 183 workers who participated in the strike but have since passed away, their cases will need to undergo a legal review process.
