Firefighters have been working tirelessly overnight to combat a bushfire that continues to rage through Grampians/Gariwerd National Park in Victoria. The park, known for its stunning rock formations and vibrant spring flora, is currently facing two emergency warnings affecting nearby communities, including Pomonal, Moyston, Willaura, Mafeking, and Maroona.

Since last week, the fire has expanded dramatically from 6,000 hectares to over 74,000 hectares, an area roughly equivalent to the size of Singapore. Despite the fire’s intensity, officials have reported that no homes have been lost, although some sheds, camping facilities, and outbuildings have been destroyed.

Fire authorities are focusing on establishing containment lines along the active fire edges, taking advantage of the cooler conditions expected over the next few days. More than 600 firefighters have dedicated their Christmas holiday to safeguarding homes and battling the fire.

Interstate assistance has also been mobilized, with 100 emergency service personnel from New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, and Tasmania arriving to help. These personnel are stationed at temporary camps set up in Ararat, facilitating collaboration in the firefighting effort.

The Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, expressed her gratitude towards the firefighters, emphasizing their commitment during this challenging time. She also stressed the importance of following safety protocols during fire bans to minimize risks to life and property.

While the cooler weather may provide a brief respite, the threat from the Grampians fire is expected to persist for weeks. Officials are remains cautious due to the possibility of hot, dry conditions returning, as well as the impact of recent dry lightning.

The fires have disrupted power supplies in areas like Moyston, Willaura, and Pomonal, while communication services have been affected by the destruction of the Mt. William communications tower. In the face of these challenges, community members are supporting each other, sharing moments of camaraderie in relief centers.

Amid the difficulties, local businesses are coming together to lend support. For instance, staff at a local hotel in Lake Bolac are preparing meals for firefighters, demonstrating the community spirit in action during this crisis.

Overall, the situation remains serious, but the resilience and cooperation among firefighters, emergency personnel, and community members provide a sense of hope during this challenging period.
