Grace Road Group Halts Expansion Amid Controversy

Grace Road Group has announced a suspension of all new projects and business expansions in Fiji as it reassesses its “future direction.” This decision follows reports in The Fiji Times which included serious allegations from a former member. The woman claimed she had been separated from her children and that members of the Grace Road Church were subjected to harsh working conditions, likening them to “slave-like” situations, with instances of physical assaults mentioned.

In response to these allegations, Grace Road Group issued a statement criticizing the media’s portrayal, arguing that they were being unfairly targeted by journalists. The group described the situation as a family dispute rather than a reflection of its practices, and firmly denied the accusations, labeling them baseless and suggesting that they were an attempt by an individual to manipulate the media for personal gain.

Emphasizing its contributions to the local economy, Grace Road pointed out its significant investments in Fiji, paying millions in taxes and providing nearly 900 jobs. The group lamented the negative impact of the allegations on its business operations, especially citing ongoing legal issues, which have hindered its expansion efforts.

The company remarked that the current environment poses challenges for foreign investors and has shaken its confidence in continuing business in Fiji. Consequently, the Grace Road Group decided to halt any new ventures while it evaluates its future plans.

Despite the challenges faced by Grace Road Group, this pause could provide an opportunity for the company to reevaluate its strategies and prioritize transparency, which may ultimately strengthen its operations and reputation in the long run. The hope is that through careful reflection and potential reforms, Grace Road can continue to be a positive force within the Fijian community.
