Government’s Commitment to the iTaukei Community Unveiled

The Coalition Government is making strides to meet the needs of the iTaukei community, according to Justice Minister Siromi Turaga. He noted that services designed to acknowledge the rights and requirements of the iTaukei people are currently being rolled out.

During his inaugural ministerial visit to Koro Island since taking office, Mr. Turaga emphasized that the opening of services specifically aimed at the indigenous community is gradually progressing.

“It will eventually grow to adapt to the changing world,” he stated. He acknowledged some complaints regarding delays in the rollout of these services but highlighted that new initiatives have been established under the Government, including many that have not been offered before.

“I apologize for the delay in our services; addressing the legacy of the past 16 years of governance is not easy,” Mr. Turaga explained.

He underscored the importance of proper consultations, stating that the Government exists to serve the people. “We are dedicated to involving the community in every governmental decision as we honor the vanua and the lotu. We aim to set a precedent for the younger generation on the correct approach,” he added.

Mr. Turaga’s visit also included interactions with government agencies that are now providing services previously unavailable to the residents of Koro.
