Government’s Bold Plan to Slash Poverty: Can They Deliver?

Poverty alleviation continues to be a primary focus for the Government, with various policies and strategies outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050. The Government aims to reduce the poverty rate from the current 52% to 18% by 2030.

During the launch of the National Development Plan at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica emphasized the need for the Coalition Government to adopt a more comprehensive and proactive approach in the short to medium term. This approach includes targeting the poor and vulnerable populations, while ensuring sustainable business growth through innovative methods, particularly in resource-based sectors.

Kamikamica stated that the effective involvement of resource owners through equity or partnerships is essential for the future development of all resource-based sectors. He reiterated the importance of intensifying efforts to alleviate poverty and tackling inequality by improving infrastructure and creating more job opportunities.

Addressing concerns about the loss of human capital, he highlighted the need for measures aimed at recovery, particularly in education and health. Kamikamica indicated that additional resources would be allocated to enhance technical capacity in education and ensure that fundamental health services, such as dialysis treatment, are available in sub-divisional and divisional hospitals.
