The Cabinet has approved a plan to fully subsidize increased bus fares starting next month for all students holding blue and yellow bus cards. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka stated that the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has completed its review of current bus fares and implemented a new fare calculation methodology after consulting with the Fiji Bus Operators Association.
Gavoka explained that according to the new methodology, the FCCC has recommended aligning student fares with adult fares, establishing the regulated student fare at 50 percent of the adult fare at every stage. He confirmed that the government will continue to fully subsidize students with blue cards under the transport assistance scheme and will also subsidize the 50 percent fare increase for students using yellow cards.
