In response to the recent alleged sexual assault and robbery involving three Virgin Airways crew members, the Fijian Government is taking proactive measures to increase police presence along the Martintar strip in Nadi, where the incident reportedly occurred. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, recognized the area as a vibrant destination known for its restaurants and nightlife, and emphasized the importance of maintaining its popularity and safety.
Gavoka stated that he will bring this issue before the Cabinet to ensure a more noticeable police presence in the region. “Increasing the visibility of police will be important for the safety of both locals and visitors, and we are committed to learning from this incident,” he noted. He confirmed that the incident transpired outside a well-frequented bar along the strip and acknowledged that a stronger police presence is within the government’s capabilities and plans.
The emphasis on enhancing security in the area signals a commitment to ensuring that both residents and tourists can enjoy the bustling nightlife without fear, contributing positively to community safety and tourism.
This situation reflects a growing awareness of the need for improved public safety measures, which can lead to enhanced trust and peace of mind for residents and visitors alike. By prioritizing safety in popular areas, the government is not only addressing immediate concerns but also reinforcing the appeal of destinations in Fiji.
