Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has expressed serious concerns regarding the operation of government vehicles on Fiji’s roads, citing a lack of adherence to traffic regulations. In his statement, Usamate pointed out that issues such as speeding and improper overtaking by government vehicles jeopardize the safety of all road users.
Additionally, he noted that rotating flashing lights are being activated on these vehicles during non-emergency situations, which he emphasized is a violation of the law. Usamate remarked that these vehicles, which are essential assets for delivering government services, should be managed properly.
He also alleged that government vehicles are frequently parked at private residences and community police posts during both weekdays and weekends. “The government’s Transport Policy clearly outlines the appropriate garaging of vehicles, yet there seems to be little enforcement, leading to potential misuse. According to the policy, vehicles should be parked in the official agency garage or parking area after hours, unless special permission is granted,” he stated.
Usamate described how one can easily observe numerous government vehicles commuting from homes to offices during busy morning hours, often transporting officials along the way. He pointed out that the policy explicitly states that only Permanent Secretaries are authorized to use government vehicles, and he stressed that such practices must be curtailed to prevent unnecessary expenditure of public resources.
