Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad has issued a firm warning to government drivers against the improper use of official vehicles. He stressed the importance of complying with the Public Service Regulations when utilizing the government vehicle fleet, making it clear that any misuse will not be tolerated.
Prasad has encouraged public involvement, urging citizens to report any misuse of government vehicles through the toll-free hotline, 1526. He pointed out that only Permanent Secretaries and Ministers have the official right to use these vehicles, which are primarily intended for work-related purposes.
“There are occasions when a vehicle may be required beyond regular hours, but using government vehicles for personal tasks, like grocery shopping, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Mr. Prasad asserted.
He also mentioned that while the government vehicle fleet is insured, accidents can interfere with service availability due to the absence of replacement vehicles. This concern was echoed by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who has called on ministers to ensure that Permanent Secretaries are held accountable for the proper usage of government vehicles. He reaffirmed that the public service regulations clearly outline the correct usage and storage procedures for these assets.
Previous discussions have addressed the introduction of guidelines designed to curb the misuse of government vehicles, including the need for official permission for after-hours use and specific licensing requirements for operators. The Finance Ministry’s focus on enhancing monitoring and adherence to regulations is part of a broader strategy to promote responsible governance and safeguard public trust.
These initiatives aim to increase accountability and ensure that government resources are utilized effectively. Mr. Prasad’s proactive approach, along with public participation, has the potential to instill a greater sense of responsibility among government vehicle operators, ultimately contributing to safer road conditions for all.
