The Cabinet has decided to fully subsidize the upcoming increase in bus fares starting next month for all students with blue and yellow bus cards. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka announced that the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has completed its review of current bus fares and has developed a new fare calculation method in collaboration with the Fiji Bus Operators Association.
Gavoka explained that the new methodology suggests aligning student fares with adult fares, which means that the regulated student fare will be set at 50 percent of the adult fare at all stages. He confirmed that the Government will continue to fully subsidize students with blue cards through the transport assistance scheme. Additionally, the Government will also subsidize the 50 percent fare increase for students using yellow cards.
