The Cabinet has decided to fully subsidize the anticipated increase in bus fares starting next month, benefiting all students who hold blue and yellow bus cards. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka announced that the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has finalized its review of current bus fares and developed a new fare calculation method in collaboration with the Fiji Bus Operators Association.
Under this new framework, the FCCC has proposed aligning student fares with adult fares, where the regulated student fare will be set at 50 percent of the adult fare at each fare stage. Gavoka confirmed that the government will maintain its full subsidy for students holding blue cards through the transport assistance scheme, and additionally, it will cover the 50 percent rise in fares for students using yellow cards.
