Selina Kuruleca’s transition from the Education Ministry to the position of Permanent Secretary for Justice marks “just the beginning” of further changes, according to Luke Rokovada, chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

In a recent interview in Nadi, Rokovada emphasized the necessity of this reshuffle. He refuted any links to performance issues or directives from the Prime Minister, stating, “The commission made the decision, with the agreement of the Prime Minister.” He clarified that all appointments or transfers of Permanent Secretaries are made by the commission in consultation with the Prime Minister.

In her absence, Ratu Meli Nacuva will assume the role of Acting Permanent Secretary for Education while continuing in his role as Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports. Rokovada highlighted Nacuva’s background in public administration, education policy, and training as crucial for enhancing the quality and accessibility of education.

Describing the rationale behind these changes, Rokovada referred to the adjustment as a standard reshuffle. “It’s just time for some of them to move around, enjoy a new environment, and contribute to their new organizations,” he explained. He added that the position of PS Justice is newly established, and since an appropriate candidate could not be sourced through advertising, Kuruleca was deemed well-suited for the role.

Addressing worries over Kuruleca’s lack of experience in the justice sector, Rokovada remarked, “The commission believes this new assignment will further leverage her skills and experience.” Additionally, he mentioned that an Acting Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry will be announced soon, following the resignation of Yogesh Karan.
