Government Salaries Increase Sparks Economic Concerns

Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube asserts that the recent increase in parliamentarians’ salaries could have significant economic consequences, potentially leading to higher prices and increasing poverty levels.

Narube expressed that these economic challenges could have been avoided with government leadership that adheres to the principles of fairness, selflessness, and respect.

“It is therefore highly ironic that the same government leadership has been described as Charismatic,” remarked the former Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor.

He further stated that the current leadership had manipulated laws and processes to increase their own pay while the nation struggles with poverty, unemployment, rising costs of living, and growing social injustice.

“This is the same party that assured the people they would not increase their salaries,” he noted.

Focusing on charisma at this moment is not only misplaced but also very misleading, according to Narube.

“Charisma is not going to save this country. The country needs a leadership that places the people’s interests first, rather than their own. We need a leadership that upholds principles of fairness, moral integrity, and selflessness. We need a leadership that keeps its promises. We need a leadership that we can trust. Charisma is far down the list of leadership attributes that Fiji needs right now.”
