The Coalition Government is committing $150 million to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS) as part of its initiative to bridge the gap between education and employment. This announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.
DPM Prasad noted that in collaboration with significant educational stakeholders, the government will provide scholarships to 300 students for industry-based training, enabling them to earn a Certificate or Diploma through partnerships with employers such as Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. He emphasized that this initiative would open new opportunities for these students, allowing them to work with the organizations that trained them after completing their programs.
Additionally, the government has introduced the Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at helping private students who perform academically but face financial difficulties beyond their control. Students at all levels, from diplomas to degrees, will receive assistance through this program.
Prasad also highlighted the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 per student for families with incomes below $50,000. This is part of their broader commitment to support education and ensure children receive necessary assistance.
“The introduction of these new schemes represents more than just an investment in education; it reflects our dedication to empowering citizens through education, skills development, and employment opportunities, which align with the new National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050,” he stated.
