A driver of a Government vehicle was apprehended yesterday morning on charges of drunk driving, underscoring the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to enforcing the law without bias.
The arrest occurred in Makoi after police received a tip-off indicating that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Officers from the Nasinu Police intercepted the vehicle, leading to the driver’s arrest and subsequent testing, which confirmed that he was above the legal alcohol limit.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, announced that the vehicle has been seized and the relevant Permanent Secretary from the Ministry has been notified of the situation. To maintain accountability, Raikaci also mentioned plans for traffic officers to conduct random checks on Government vehicle drivers, including those of the police. This initiative aims to prevent unauthorized use of Government assets and ensure equitable treatment for all drivers, reinforcing the principle that no individual is above the law.
This proactive step taken by the Fiji Police serves as a reminder that accountability extends to everyone, helping foster trust in public institutions and the rule of law. It is a hopeful indication that the government is prioritizing integrity and public safety.
In summary, the incident highlights the authorities’ efforts to uphold the law uniformly, affirming that all drivers, regardless of their position, will be held accountable for their actions.
