A government driver was apprehended yesterday morning for drunk driving, leading to a stern reminder from the Fiji Police Force that the law applies equally to everyone, with no exceptions.
After receiving a tip-off, Nasinu Police officers stopped the government vehicle in Makoi, where it was discovered the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The individual was taken into custody and subsequently failed a sobriety test, confirming he was over the legally permitted alcohol limit.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, indicated that the vehicle involved has been confiscated and the relevant Permanent Secretary has been informed of the incident. He further emphasized that traffic officers would be conducting random checks on government vehicle operators, including police vehicles, to prevent misuse of governmental assets and ensure adherence to regulations.
Raikaci stressed the necessity for uniform enforcement of the law, highlighting that all drivers are to be treated equally, without special allowances.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the accountability that exists for all individuals, including those in government positions, reinforcing the commitment to upholding the rule of law in Fiji. As authorities enhance their monitoring efforts, it provides a hopeful perspective that such actions will promote safer road environments for all citizens.
This reinforces the positive move toward a society where rules are applied consistently, fostering trust in law enforcement and governmental responsibility.
