Civil servants have received a strong reminder to comply with the law following the arrest of a government vehicle driver for drunk driving on Friday morning. According to a statement from the Fiji Police, the driver was apprehended after being intercepted by Nasinu police officers in Makoi, based on a tip-off about his alleged drunken state while operating the vehicle.

The police confirmed that the driver was taken into custody and subsequently tested, revealing that he had exceeded the legal alcohol limit. Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci stated that the government vehicle was seized, and the permanent secretary of the relevant ministry was informed about the incident.

Mr. Raikaci emphasized that traffic officers would be conducting routine snap checks, which will also include examinations of government vehicle drivers, including police patrols. These actions aim to ensure that government resources are used appropriately and not exploited for unauthorized activities. He reiterated the commitment to uphold the rule of law, ensuring that all drivers receive equal treatment without any exceptions.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of responsible behavior, especially among those in public service. It reflects a clear stance on accountability and promotes a culture of compliance with the law. By enforcing these checks, the authorities are taking positive steps to uphold public trust and integrity in governmental operations.

In summary, the crackdown on drunk driving among civil servants underscores a zero-tolerance policy for illegal behavior, reinforcing the idea that public servants are held to the same standards as anyone else. This proactive approach can foster a safer environment on the roads and enhance public confidence in the governance system.
