Government Boosts Sugarcane Farmers with Financial Aid Program

The Ministry of Sugar Industry is taking steps to increase sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the Northern Division, providing assistance to 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program.

Eligible farmers under this initiative receive financial aid covering 30 percent of lease renewal costs, with a maximum limit of $7,500. During a grant agreement distribution event yesterday, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh stated that the program is designed to alleviate financial pressures on farmers and motivate both new and existing growers to enhance sugarcane production.

Singh emphasized the importance of the sugar industry in the northern division, highlighting the need for its revival. He explained that government assistance has been made available following farmers’ concerns regarding the high costs associated with lease renewal premiums.

Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received support through the Farm Mechanization Grant for purchasing a cane planter and fertilizer applicator. The Ministry plans to extend this assistance to sugarcane farmers in the western division as well.

To date, a total of 177 sugarcane farmers in both the northern and western divisions have benefited from this program. In expressing gratitude for the initiative, Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab noted that the support has been a significant relief for his family, as the government covered $5,000 of his $15,000 premium.
