Government Boosts Education Pathways with $150 Million Investment

The Coalition Government is taking significant steps to bridge the education-employment gap by allocating $150 million towards the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS). This initiative was underscored by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.

Professor Prasad announced that through collaboration with key educational stakeholders, the government is offering scholarships to 300 students for industry-based training, allowing them to earn a Certificate or Diploma with companies such as Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom.

“This initiative will undoubtedly broaden the opportunities for these 300 students, who will have the chance to work with the employers that train them after finishing their programs,” he stated.

Additionally, the government has launched the Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at supporting private students who excel academically but face financial difficulties due to circumstances beyond their control.

“Through this scheme, we aim to assist students at all levels, from diploma programs to degrees,” he added.

Professor Prasad also highlighted the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 per student for families earning below $50,000, reinforcing their ongoing commitment to education and ensuring that children receive the necessary support.

“These new initiatives represent more than just an investment in education. They showcase our government’s dedication to equipping our citizens with education, as well as the skills and opportunities needed for employment, which form part of the new National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.”
