Independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has expressed concerns regarding several decisions and appointments made by the government, stating that they could have been executed more effectively. In an appearance on The Lens@177, Mr. Usamate indicated that he was dissatisfied with certain governmental actions.
He emphasized the importance of institutional integrity and good governance, highlighting the necessity of appointing the right individuals to key positions. “We’ve seen failed candidates being appointed to various roles, and I’m not convinced that serves the best interests of the country,” he remarked. He noted that inappropriate appointments often lead to poor decision-making and flawed processes.
When pressed to name specific individuals who he believes were wrongly appointed, Mr. Usamate opted to reserve those details for discussion in Parliament.
He also reflected on comments made during the campaign regarding the potential restructuring of the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and a shift towards the Public Works Department. Mr. Usamate noted that since taking office, there appears to be a shift in the government’s stance, acknowledging the importance of the FRA.
Addressing another issue, he pointed out the lack of an invitation for the Opposition to the traditional welcoming ceremony for the Indian President’s visit to Fiji, labeling such oversights as indicative of poor adherence to protocol rules, further reflecting on the consequences of inadequate appointments.
